Marissa Rooney stands in her daughter’s empty dorm room, a half-used vial of insulin clutched in her trembling hand. Brooke has been missing for days. Her roommate hasn’t seen her since that night in the bar. And if Marissa has Brooke’s insulin, it means that Brooke does not.

But Marissa isn’t alone in her terror. A phantom from her past is lurking in the shadows, waiting in the night, and holding her family captive…

In the dark.

"An edge-of-your-seat suspense novel. It scared the hell out of me. Read it with the lights on!"
~Robert Dugoni - #1 and New York Times bestselling author of My Sister's Grave

I voted for this book at Kindle Scout and was tickled pink when I got notified that it had been chosen for publication. But before receiving the email, I noticed that it was also listed on NetGalley and I was approved to read and review.

Short blurb: Marissa's college age daughter is abducted. But local cops think she's a runaway. Mom knows better ... her daughter is diabetic and has left all her insulin behind. But mom is tenacious and stubborn and refuses to let the police put this on a back burner. Along with Detective Seth Crawford, she swears to move heaven and hell to find her daughter before it's too late.

Marissa is such a strong character. She's got a history of three ex-husbands, but she's managed to put herself through school, raise two daughters basically on her own, and now she has to withstand the terror of not knowing where her daughter is.

Seth is another really strong character with a history. He carries scars from a fire in which he was unable to save his wife.

The plot is tightly woven and managed to draw me in and keep me locked in from the very first. Even the secondary characters came to life in a big way. I found myself turning pages faster and faster the more I read. The ending was absolutely breath-taking.

In the Dark A Holt Foundation Story Book 1 edition by Chris Patchell Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

When Marissa hasn't heard from her daughter for a few days, she starts to worry. This isn't like Brooke at all!! When she still can't get through to her and hears from her best friend, who hasn't seen her either, she goes to the police. The police aren't in a rush to find Brooke, but Marissa pushes them because Brooke needs insulin and she doesn't have her back up with her. If she doesn't get it soon she will die!! It's a race against time for Brooke!

The plot of this was, once it got going, fast paced and thrilling. This is the first book in a series and as such, has a lot of world and character building to do, but it's done well enough here that I didn't mind it!! I enjoyed seeing Marissas back story and learning more about her. I enjoyed getting a peek into the bad guys thoughts too. Seeing Brooke going through what she was going through was tough but added extra tension to the story.

Character wise, they were all well written and developed. Marissa is a great character. She has had a tough time and is just trying to make a living. As any mother would, she does everything she can to find her daughter, but it's helped when she is approached by a wealthy lady to run a new concept she has. She wants to open a foundation that will help people look for missing people, they will also help the victims of things like this. Marissa accepts and so has extra power to help her daughter.

In all, this was a great read. I flew through it!! It's over 14hrs long but didn't feel like it. I am looking forward to the next one!!

The duel narration was perfect! Both narrators read this extremely well, they were easy to listen to and gave a great performance. Both had plenty of tones for the different characters and I enjoyed their narration.

I was voluntarily provided this audiobook for free from the author, narrator, or publisher. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.
It started out good then 60% into the book it failed. I do not want to give the story away, but really? Your daughter is missing and you fall in love with the detective on the case. Then you have sex together. Come on! If my child was missing, I could not get up off the floor never mind falling in love. Then the best part, she is writing clues down to help with the investigation and she is annoyed because her daughter is missing and she wasting her time writing down clues. That's what she should be doing. But she has time for sex. Stupid women.

There really wasn't any mystery or a thriller. You knew who done it and why right from the beginning. Everything really was unbelievable. I can't believe the good reviews. It was basically a hokey Lifetime movie. Just glad I did not pay a lot for the book. Waste of time.
Even though the villain is revealed (or easily guessable) right away, it didn't ruin the story. Seeing things through the bad guy's eyes, and watching as he becomes more and more unglued, just seemed to add a more frantic element to the story. Brooke, a diabetic, disappears, and the fact that she has limited insulin with her adds adrenaline to the story.

Marissa, Brooke's mom, was both a weak and strong point in the story. Strong in that she survived a lot in her life, works hard to support herself and her daughters, and is adamant about getting the police to believe Brooke hasn't just run away. Weak in that she thinks starting a romantic relationship in the middle of her daughter's investigation (with the lead investigator no less!) is a good idea. Also, near the end when she doesn't wait for back up (eye roll).

There were a lot of twists and turns along the way, and the storyline kept moving along at a good pace.
